Rating of the March Trains Issue

Given my recent time crunch, I am not going to be as descriptive as I normally am, but what is everyone’s rating on the March Trains issue?

I give it an 8, and I think it is the best one I have seen since I have started this “rating thread.”

It was very much more business oriented, which I like. The article on the possible introduction of the 315,000 lbs car is, in short, why I keep buying the magazine. I thought the map of the month was very good (although I would have liked to have also seen a pass-through traffic grid in addition to originating and destination traffic).

I thought the Route 66 artilce had some pretty good photography, but it isn’t really the reason why I buy the magazine–I realize this is a personal taste thing rather than a reflection on the quality of the issue.

Ask Trains was kind of pedestrian, but I think Trains doesn’t have a lot of control over how interesting or in-depth the questions on it are.

The article about painting the locomotives was also interesting.

What are your thoughts?

P.S. I probably shouldn’t say this, but has anyone else’s eyebrow raised for the next issue? I like food as much as the next guy, but having the entire magazine devoted to such a narrow topic that will likely appeal to a small percentage of the readers strikes me as a bit of a gamble. Nonetheless, I will withhold evaluation until I read it.

I’d give it one of my higher ratings.

Food service on Amtrak is now a hot button issue and I’d hope that much of the issue will be devoted to the business as well as the esthetics.

This month was pretty good.

Food, I love it. Let’s see what they have in the issue tho.

I give it a 9.5 out of 10 one of the best in a while.

as a non-subscriber i’ll have to go out and buy that issue since everyone’s talking so highly of it.

This is the very best issue in the last few months in my opinion. The Locomotive painting, MRL’s new Diesels, the test track in CO, all very well done!

I’m not so sure about a dedicated issue on food, but I too will reserve judgement until I have read it. I’m not a big fan of any dedicated issues, because I like the variety.

I give this issue an 8 out of 10, overall good job.

Please dont think all I have too say is negative, because I eagerly have anticipated it’s arrival in my mailbox every month since 1996!

Brian

Low very low like a 3 out of 10 cause they left out any mention of the Rt 66 museum in Barstow nor the historical stuff @ Daggett where the tracks are only 5 or so feet from Rt 66

Trains is always superb! Maybe our ratings should aways run from 9.0 to 10.0. With that scale it would seem that most ratings would fall in the 9.7 to 9.8 range!!

I would also rate this issue as about an 8 of 10. But then again, I’ve always looked forward to each issue of TRAINS since 1967 and I’ve rarely been disappointed.
