Can anyone tell me if there is a good tutorial online on how to “quarter” a steam locomotive? I need to remove and replace a gear box on a Brass Steamer that I have and I know that this will involve “quartering” the drive train. I know NWSL sells all the tools and jigs needed to do the job, I just haven’t seen anything that tells me HOW to do the job.
It’s not all that hard, assuming the driver is already accurately quartered. Scribe a witness mark showing the positon of the axle and driver. Pull the wheel and old gear. Install new gear. Press wheel on ,carefully lining up witness mark. Carefully press driver to correct gauge (use NMRA standards Gauge) That’s all there is to it.
The NWSL puller is a big help, though you can get by without. I’d recomend investing in one and it’s a useful tool for correcting out of gauge wheels and other jobs, and not too expensive. I haven’t got a suitable arbor press, so I use my drill press for pressing on gears, and wheels. Other NWSL tools (quarterer, arbor press) would be helpful, but not necessary, esp. if you don’t have many of these jobs to do. NWS catalog and website have a lot of good basic info on “how-to”
If driver is out of quarter to start with and you don’t want to invest in the tool, you can usually get them straightened out with a fit and try approach. Work slowly and carefuly, applying minmal force and you should have no problems.
