Re motoring a Proto 2000 BL2 Locomotive

I’ve got a Proto 2000 BL2 Loco that I won on Ebay that I’ve discovered has at least one broken winding on the motor. I was going to slap a Kato HM-5 motor that I had laying around into it BUT the Kato has 2mm shafts and the original motor has 2.5mm shafts so the flywheels are too loose on the Kato motor. My next option wold be a 70321 repowering kit from A-Line. Does anyone on here have any other sugesstions. It’s a nice looking train and I dont mind tinkering with it but I don’t want to spend more money on something I cant use. Thanks for any help.

Another option would be to purchase any used P2K locomotive from the days when Life Like Industries owned the company, and canabalize the motor out of it, since they were probably all the same.

I’ve seen only the chassis and mechanism offered on eBay periodically, since you don’t need a shell.

Source out a Stewart f unit. With minimal work, it will fit on your chassis. David B

An Athearn motor should work for this application.

I have used a Kato motor from either a Kato GP35 or SD40. The motor comes with two flywheels attached and has the 4 post motor mount. It is a drop in replacement for the P2K BLT. You also need to change out the drive shafts and worm couplings with the new Athearn hex type. Use the ones for and Athearn GP40-2. The hex shafts are a perfect fit into the Kato motor’s flywheels.

Northwest Shortline has sleeve adapters that will work for you. The adapter goes on the motor shaft, which will then fit the flywheel.

Really? I’ll have to check that out, I cant imagine a sleeve that would work since it would only have to be around 1/4mm thick. I would think it would just crumple up but I’ll check it out.

Another good option is Helix Humper #146:

NWSL makes their ultra thin sleeves from steel, and they actually work very well, so you could sleeve a more standard motor to fit the old flywheels.
