Re-Motoring a steam loco

I have a Bachman URSA 0-6-0 HO scale steam loco with some problems with the engine. I was curious if I would be able to re-engine it somehow because it is sort of a nice engine. If not I will contcact Bachman about that Lifetime Warannty…

Try checking out Northwest Short Line at www.nwsl.com

They have motors and parts that you could use to re-motor it. It’s not really cheap to do, but if you really want to keep the locomotive, it may be your best option.

I personally haven’t had great luck with Bachmann and their so-called “lifetime warranty.” But you could also give them a try if you don’t like the idea of re-motoring it yourself. It would be less expensive to do it that way, anyway.

Good luck.

If it’s a new loco, Bachmann should either replace the motor, or the entire loco, both for free.

If you’re dealing with the older version of this loco, it has a pancake motor and noisy gear train, and there are no viable alternatives for remotoring. This engine was recently updated with a smooth running Mabuchi can motor, and if you send it in to Bachmann they will replace it with the newer version, which is your best bet.

Edit: Wow! Great minds think alike, huh? [swg]

Avenger,

Personally, I wouldn’t even bother. For the amount of $$$ you’d spend on remotoring it, you’d be better off looking for and picking up a Proto 2000 0-6-0 off eBay, which is a MUCH better running and looking locomotive. I picked up a 2nd run Proto 2000 0-8-0 last year for $80 off eBay. (MSRP: $250) It’s one beautiful locomotive! [^][tup]

How would I be able to contact Bachman and pressure them to replace my loco?

You can call them at the number listed here. Service/Parts

Kind of a poor choice of words: I’ve found Bachmann very pleasant to deal with and the folks in Parts and Service to be very friendly and helpful. A polite explanation of your problem will get you much better results than any confrontational approach.

I may or may not try and convince Bachman to service it. It is 10ish years old and besides, there are more problems than the motor. I’l have think it thru…

They are very pleasant and professional to deal with. Because of Bachmann’s warranty, $15 will get you a loco running like new. (If not a new one) Just be sure to use a tracking number when shipping said product.
