Still, there is much more to the message than the mere words, however artfully composed or presented. I won’t take sides in this ancient, and hopefully still moribund, thread, but there is also the meta message in what each of us writes. It can be distasteful and objectionable, and indefensible. Those who find it so have to either take a stand against it, or let it fester and perhaps even become the norm. Deeds, or words?
It’s always a personal choice for each of us; what to do about what we see and hear, and what we make of it. Sometimes we shrug, sometimes we object. Objecting without being objectionable is a skill that few of us master.
On another rail, I have a pet peeve about “judgment”. It became the socially correct thing to do in the past couple of decades to “not judge” others as if it was an unwelcome intrusion or attack. Fact is, nothing we have achieved that is of value in our society was gained from a lack of judgment. Each of us has been molded by the judgments of others, whether peers or elders, intelligent or not. All our science and philosophy have been developed by discerning and disciplined minds that were adamant about what they found acceptable and about what was unacceptable. It should be no surprise that there were strong bonds formed between some, and strong enmity and bitterness between others. Sir Issac Newton and the head of the Royal Society at the time, Robert Hooke, were bitter enemies. They duked it out in the journal of the Society. Each had his backers. Do any of you remember Hooke?
Some things never change, and should not. Some things we could afford to let go…like this thread.
A note to anyone who chooses to post on this thread…please understand that PZ has placed this link to a part of a thread purposely to take what is being discussed out of context.
Also note that somewhere near 30 replies are missing, removed by Erik, due to the foul language the posters used, and several replies are missing due to members leaving the forum after being called everything from a**holes, told to go **** yourself, “kiss my…” …well, you get the point.
Quite a few members requested Erik to remove all of their contributions to the forum.
If you were around back then, you most likely remember the blitz of one line postings by the trolls whose intent was to trash the forum…they were posting at such a high rate they over ran the server several times a day…
Lots of…“Why is BN so mean?”
“This place sucks”
“Conrail rules UP drools”…Fun, mature stuff like that.
So, just a suggestion…
Go back and read the entire thread from the beginning, keeping in mind it is incomplete, and missing a large part of its content.
Also note the contributions and comments from the younger members.
Well, I’m a teenager, although I try to keep my posts formal and no additude. I agree with you, many kids on here do act immature and mean, but for the most part, age shouldnt be an issue as we are all on here to share our love for trains, whether we are 5 or 90.
Unlike some forums, this forum shouldnt have its place in discrimination. I have heard by some people on CTT and Model Railroader, that age is important as it tells them “what level of conversation we are on” (they dont expect a 15 year old to have as much experience as a 40 year old) but on here, thats different. You can only say that your are more “experienced” with railroading only if you work for it. Otherwise, we are all on level terms when it comes with experience. We learn from others, we learn from books, we learn from Wikipedia ([:D]), and we continue to learn because we want to know all we can about trains. Age should be no issue unless its “prominent”. By “prominent” I mean that they are doing to what the author of this thread was reffering too, acting childish.
Boy is this thread old! I had forgot I’d even posted here before, though it does seem to echo my post of the other day. And much of it still rings true too…
I do recall that this thead had a few more posts than this though, and like Ed said, I think much of it has been cleaned up. What’s really sad is that parts of the posts here haven’t changed too much since this was posted a little over two years ago. There aren’t as many “one liners,” but we still get our fair share of the topics that were complained about in the original post. But, I guess somethings never change…
i’m 19 and i dont troll much. i’ve up and moved any of my feelings on UP to a blog where those who dont wish to see a nasty rant dont need to clicky the link
so now i’m just a happy dude who just likes to talk trains
I have to admit I am with Ed, Wabash and others who see this forum as an opportunity to learn, share and meet others with similar interests. There’s an awful lot of knowledge to be gained here which I find fascinating. Also some of the questions that get asked or threads that get started I discover I actually have some information to contribute! For me that has been great fun. It will continue to be so as long as I continue to exercise restraint and common sense.
Also, I am learning that some threads are better pursued off forum as Ed and I are doing with the ‘PTRA’ thread that hubbabubba2 started a while ago. I have a sheaf of paper and a level of knowledge that I wouldn’t have had before. Fun and hard work too.
I guess we all have our reasons for posting. Keeping that in mind helps.
…and who says he’s not allowed to change how he acts/thinks? Give him a chance at least. Unless you’re perfect in which case have a rock and go to town.
Loaded and ready…but I try to think before I ‘spray’. Caterpillers can turn into butterflies ya know! Besides, I’m not perfect and don’t like being ‘swatted’ anymore than other people do.
maybe I;m wrong, but it seems the person who started this thread with the first postis now saying all of his words havebeen taken out of contxet now that it has been brought up again.
