thank you Jim for your response. no, i don’t model the SAL, but the SOO, which had re-trucked RSC3’s [to B-B], and i was thinking of changing back my 4 axle [Atlas RS3 model] to A-1-A trucks, as delivered. oh well, just a thought. don’t ask me why! as far as that “awful turbo stack” i am not familiar with that. give me some info please. did the RS2 or RSC2 have that stack? thank you! regards, michael. ps: did the BNSF replace the Milw. in your modeling?
The only problem with modeling an RSC-3 is the truck sideframes. As far as I know none of the model manufacturers ever made an RSC-3 truck. Kato and Walthers have an RSC-2 truck, but the sideframes look completely different than an RSC-3 truck.
thank you for the info. the only other question would be - what is the difference between a RS3 body and a RSC3 body? i’m an Alco newbie, but i like the road switchers. regards, michael.
The turbo exhaust stack on the Atlas model is sort of ‘tapered’ and is not correct for either the air-cooled or water-cooled turbo stack. Atlas announced at the NTS that they were going to update the sheel at some point when a new run of the RS-3 is issued. As far as the trucks - I am not really familiar with them as the SOO re-trucked them to B-B quite early.
The RS3 body has the battery boxes on the walk way, and the fuel tank was moved from under the cab floor to under the car body(between the trucks). RS3’s do not have the fuel filler(and fuel stains) below the cab. IIRC, there are a couple of inches of overall lenght as well. But I suspect you can live with that, as long as you can live with the Kato or P1K trucks. The other hard part to model the all the Soo Line ‘duct work’ on the top of the long hood!
Jim
thanks for the input Jim. i can live with the body differences. it’s tolerable. as far as the ductwork goes. i purchased this model on Ebay because of just that. all ductwork complete and fairly right on as far as photo’s go. looks great- and unique. i won’t fret over the tapered “turbo stack”. can’t really see it all with the ductwork surrounding it, plus it has spark arrestor on top. i am very happy with the craftsmanship and detail, plus it is nicely weathered. i’ll forget about the truck change and keep it as the retrucked unit. regards, michael.
