Re: Trains-politics

Certainly, I can see this thread going down the “flame trail”…

Either way, this thread opens a can of worms. The political atmosphere in this country is very contentious, dare I say, “confrontational”? It’s been a long primary season, and it’s going to be a longer campaign until November.

In all of my years, I have never seen the country so sharply divided on the candidates for president, it is either a “you love them or you hate them” kind of mentality. I see very little middle ground among those that I know. The anti-Obama people are vociferous, and cutting. and the anti-McCain people are touting him as “Bush II”.

Right now, we are in a world of extreme danger, a level that hasn’t been seen since the summer of 1914. Even the years leading up to WWII was the not as tense as the situtaion prior to WWI or now. Between terrorism, a resurgent Russia, an emerging China, and rogue states working to acquire nuclear weapons, we need leaders that are going to ensure the safety of this country, and our way of life. Our domestic issues of energy, immigration, and health care are important, but, they aren’t going to mean much if the integrity, and sovereignty of this country is threatened.

Trains are not really an issue that drives any interest by the electorate.

John McCain hates Amtrak (it’s a financial mess, even to keep the existing system operating is going to cost billions let alone expand it)

but Barack has stated his opposition to the CN-EJE deal (pretty much on the basis that somebody somwhere may not like it).

So in that sense, both candidates are against railroads.

John may oppose Amtrak because it isn’t a workable system (and he has a point), but I don’t think he would oppose a railroad merger just because it means more trains on the tracks (Obama’s position).

Again, trains aren’t really a big issue with anybody except those affected by them, and by and large that is very few people.

We don’t need another R person in the White House like MCcain, need a fresh start again with a D in the White House again?[2c]

…Anyone with any grasp of all the mess in the world today would not put passenger trains at the top of the list to use to select as our next President. It was not my intention to do so in the above post.

I was just giving my opinion of how Sen. McCain feels about Amtrak passenger rail…And my opinion listed above is from what I’ve heard him say over the years and his listed position on the subject.

Flame war, I’m not interested in.
