Union Pacific is selling an SD90MAC, and the t’s going for under $200,000!
It’s big, all right…but no thanks. H engine. …with at least one power assembly not functional. Value is likely in the parts and scrap.
but they will sell it instead of repairing it. says a lot
Of course all of the 265-H engined 6,000 HP SD90s have already been retired from service so what else would they do with it?
I have read that they examined repowering these units with 16-710s but found the price prohibitive (apparently largely due to issues with the electrical system)…
Maintainance headaches don’t live too long do they? Or evolutionary dead ends.
Why does the ad have pictures of a SD70ACe?

You expect used equipment dealers to out-do their used-cars cousins? " Driven only on Sundays by little old UP Hoggers?"[swg][swg][swg]
Nice road slug conversion candidate.(?) Maybe BNSF will remember what ATSF did with UP 4-Axle hulks (including some now on IANR after 35+ years of service)
That is an SD90MAC in the picture - Note the D/B behind the radiator. The SD90 and AC6000 engines are not EPA emission compliant - Both of these 6000 hp models are sort of a ‘bridge too far’ and would cost a lot of money to upgrade. IIRC, CSX has or has been looking into repowering their AC6000 fleet with a V16 GEVO power plant. The EMD 265 and GE FDH are sort of ‘Do Do’ engines due to their unique power plants.

I see the name line through, but that style of car body seems more like the SD70ACe. All the previous EMD’s had the different style nose and tail configuration.

Or at least “part out” the radial trucks and traction motors. I guess you could have the DC buss from an AC “mother” and the keep the inverters if you wanted to make an AC slug. Would make a heck of a hump set!
Jeff,
UP 8555 is an EMD SD90MAC-H2. They have the later style nose similar to the SD70ACe. The ‘clincher’ is the angled roofline over the engine compartment.
