And then, across the entire state of Montana, plus a line named anatomically, was abandoned a complete segment of a transcontinental railroad.

This railroad “knows how to run a railroad.” Great pubic image, freight cars that proudly proclaim who they are and a zeal for growth!

William Hayes, when you say Pennsylvania has a lot of abandoned mileage, that is true, didn’t know we were a leader in narrow gauge, but the Pittsburgh and Western was originally narrow gauge. In spite of the name, the majority of track miles went northeast from Pittsburgh. The small portion that did go West eventually became part of B&O’s route to Chicago and remained so until they gained trackage rights through Pittsburgh on the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie in the 1930’s. I think the Pittsburgh and Western had the most narrow gauge mileage in the state. I think most of it is now gone, and of course what’s left is standard gauge, the part that was once part of the Chicago line is now part of two short lines and the old P&LE main line is part of CSX.

My “SPV” railroad atlases indicate, on casual perusal, that Pennsylvania has the most abandoned railroad mileage of any state in the US, especially narrow gauge. Anyone know, fer sure? Interesting, methinks.

William, you have to remember that Pennsylvania has a looong history of resource extraction industries over the last 150 years: oil, lumber, coal. These each created lots of little branches and hundreds of railroads companies meandering all over the place to extract these resources as quickly as possible.

Jim Norton, you said it all. I was a guest at RBMN a few years ago and got to see the operation close-up. Their employee pride really shows, and for good reason.

I remember with pleasure riding their steam excursions in the 1990s.

William, Pennsylvania has many abandoned miles of railroad. Rail trails are common in eastern PA. When the eastern roads went bankrupt and were consolidated into Conrail, many miles of track became redundant due to the economic conditions of the time. My favorite hiking trail is an old PRR branch that parallels the current Blue Mountian and Reading main line north of Hamburg. The ownership of the BMRR has invested wisely and grown through their marketing acumen and commitment to customer service.
