It is unclear whether this is a new bridge and how much new trackage will be built or is it a replacement?
Muller said he has worked for almost 20 years to get this bridge built. If he wanted to use his own money he would have built the bridge already. What he meant to say is that after 20 years of lining the pockets of various elected officials, he finally convinced them to use our tax dollars to finance the majority of the project.
Google map location: Leisure Lane, Jim Thorpe, PA
Jim, it’s a new bridge. Currently, traffic on the Nesquehoning Branch from Reading to Wilkes-Barre has to perform a reverse move in Jim Thorpe to use the current bridge. This will allow those trains to directly connect with the NB main on the other side of the Lehigh River w/o having to stop and run the power around the train.

Philip Nichols of Ohio (and therefore not funding this bridge)…how exactly would the bridge be funded if it were a roadway? Oh that’s right, tax money. This is one of the better programs the state runs.
I think Reading & Northern does a great job! I’m glad they continue to prosper.
I’ve studied this option a few years ago…if Muller was serious about creating an effecient through route he should reopen the tunnel at Lansdale, and rehab the short Greenwood IT with a new southern connection to the mainline. This would shorten the route considerably and skip the steap grades and sharp curves climbing up to Hauto. Better yet, perhaps the money should be spent rebuilding the joint NS/RN bridge just north of the proposed new bridge. The current bridge is rusted so bad some of the joints are no longer connected!!
