How is Rebar shipped I have seen mostly it on bulkheads, but do they throw some in gondolas?
Looking for more info on Rebar
Thanks
I’ve seen it as open loads on flatcars and in gondolas. It probably depends on how much is being shipped and its destination.
Rebar is often shipped in gondolas. It depends on what cars are avalable, and how long the rebar is.

Don’t forget too, that rebar comes in a variety of sizes, so if you are modeling a load, you could vary the thickness of the material you are using to represent it. It would be a neat touch and would let each load look slightly different.

Also keep in mind that re-bar is heavy, and will not cube out the railroad car.
I use to work for Hurricane Industries in Sealy Texas years ago that melted down scrap metal and made it into rebar. They shipped it out by truck which took it to one of the rail yards in Houston to be loaded on flat cars to be transported to where ever.

Trailer Train TTX has some flats in the TTJX series call “finger flats” just for hauling rebar.
just putting in my [2c] if thats ok, rebar is also preformed (bent) before shipping in some cases. Which would make a very interesting load.
They come in about all shapes and sizes, depending on what they’re needed for. Square and round are most common (think a bldg or bridge column / support). With that, they also can be a pre-assembled tube (think finger tortue game) also of varying sizes around and long.
Just my input as an end-user of said rebar.

Most of what I’veseen (here in Minneapolis) on the rail will be standard lengths, about 40’, being delivered to the fabricators. The fabricators will cut to length and bend as per the customer order, and then ship out by truck to the job site. Standard rebar will varry in diameter from 1/4" diameter up to 2" diameter in 1/8" incraments, most common are sizes below the 1" mark. Also remember that there is uncoated or black rebar that is gun metal grey color, and epoxy coated or green rebar that is typically light green clolor. As for which rail cars, it depends on what is available at the time of loading, most of what I’ve seen here are gondolas.
The larger ( 1"+) rebar will only be stacked about halfway up in a gon, due to the weight. Don’t forget wood spacer blocks to fa***ate unloading, and put those heavy loads towards the head end of your freights!
I am also modeling rebar loads right now. I am using brass wire (.4mm thickness). I cut it to length, then rolled a large flat file back and forth across the wire to give the wire a texture similar to rebar. I then airbrushed it with Tamiya iron grey (acrylic), then “rusted” it with a dusting of rust colored paint and chalks. It turned out great! If I could figure out how to put the photo on this forum, I would send you the pics. I also found a type of window screen (flat plastic type, not the overlapping aluminum stuff) that can be cut to size and painted to look amazingly like concrete mesh. That is my next project.
