Reccomendations for storage of trains

Due to loss of the space where my layout is I have to take the layout down and store the trains and accessories. At this point I think they will be in the loft of my garage. Any suggestions for storing / protecting the trains and accessories while in storage would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jim

Jim,

I wrap everything in 2-3 layers of white acid free tissue paper followed by bubblewrap. Don’t ever just wrap an item with bubble wrap.

Jim: Awhile back, I remember reading a post with a similar question. One of the suggestions, if I recall correctly, was to make sure that the couplers were stored in the “open” position. (Just passing it along for what it is worth)

Don’t seal anything metal inside plastic. I once came across a collection where the owner had meticulously wrapped each item in plastic. Unfortunately, the plastic also sealed in the moisture in the air and rust developed on the metal parts, thus ruining much of the collection.

Jim…I have the solution. You could set your layout up in my basement, after I clean it up a little. You could stop buy and run your trains when you are in Central Ohio then take me out for some good barbeque and few adult beverages.

Seriously, moisture control is step one. I guess I wold use a tight Rubber Maid container, each piece wrapped in non-acid paper surrounded by bubble wrap and something like this that would attract moisture: http://www.damprid.com/index034c.html There are other silica gels that would also work. In a sealed container it should last longer than 45 days.

I have many of my cars stored in this type of container:

They protect the boxes from being crushed.
