I do mostly display oriented models and wanted to achieve a “satin” or “eggshell” finish (like what your new loco has when you take it outta the box - where its not necessarily flat but its definately not glossy). I generally use a gloss cote to apply decals, but I then wanna take that shine away without making the finished product really dull. I use a lot of Floquil colors and was wondering if their crystal cote will give me this effect or if there is another product out there that will do the trick. thanks
I don’t know about Floquil but I was told how to achieve it with Scalecoat paint but have yet to try it. As you may know, Scalecoast goes on glossy which is what you want to apply decales. They also have a gloss glaze that you paint over it that reportedly tames down the gloss but still makes it shiny. I may be trying that on a passenger car in the next week or so.
I use a clear satin overspray, but that’s just me.
-Spray Can: ModelMaster Satin
-Testors Bottles: Mix Glosscote & Dullcote until desired sheen is achieved, thin with Testor Airbrush thinner of Mineral Spirits.
-Floquil: Mix Flat & Crystal Coat until desired sheen is achieved. Floquill Flat is almost satin, so it won’t take much gloss.
Try out the mix on some scrap material first.
That’s what I use, too. I find that I can use this as a base coat for decals, and they come out fine. Then I’ll use either another coat of satin or Dul-Cote to seal the decals.
