I recently read an article on how to build Hayes Bumpers using brass stock and rails; I even modeled the wooden form used to bend and align the parts. I can not re-find the article, even though I have gone page-by-page into all 2014 issues of MR; did I dream this up? Anyone have a clue where Imight find that article?
I remember that article. I built the jig and bent up and soldered several bumpers. I was never able to get the bumpers to come out true and square looking. I finally bought a flock of molded plastic kits to protect the ends of the spurs. I have a lot of spurs, which NEED bumpers to prevent cars from rolling off the end of the track and then over the edge of the table, to their doom upon the floor.
The walthers model is a bit oversized and clunky. The Peco one will clip into the web of Code 83 rail and look fine. You could ACC it to the rail if you really need the stopping ability but if it is just snapped in you have less risk of damage.
I just built a half dozen of these last week from plastic kits. I want to say they were Tichy group kits, but I can’t seem to find the packaging that they came in. They assembled quickly and look really nice.
Most of my sidings use bumpers made up of a pair of bridge ties buried between the rails in a V shape so that only about 3 feet sticks up above the railhead. Plop a tie on the rail against the vertical ties and pour a bucket of ballast on it to keep things from moving. I got the idea after having to replace a few at work.
