Recent Kitbashes

I have recently tried to un-Russian two of my 2-10-0s and am posting the results here.

Still to be done is the replacement of the stacks with something not quite as tall.

Perhaps if you could tell us what you have done to the model, it could be appreciated more?

Bob Boudreau

Sorry Bob.

The changes are just quite minor and compared to your work, quite simple. However, they are the first attempts at modifying a steam loco so were quite tentative. The main job was to remove the large, boxy, sandbox that the locos came with. After filling the largish hole in the boiler, I made new sand boxes from spare steam domes. The access ladders to the sand boxes were replaced with steps and a new airtanks was added to the pilot deck, something all GER locos carry, if there’s room.

Both tenders were modified to recess the coal bunker and to raise the coal bunker sides. Stirrup steps were added to the rear sides of the tender as there were none on the original models.

Engine No.163 has had a lower crosshead guide added while engine No. 164 retains the original single guide. Still to be changed are the stacks and I’m wondering how to add more of an arc to the cab roof or if this would just be a waste of time.

As I said, these are my first loco modifications and I was hoping to make them look less like Russian decapods. Comments, and suggestions are welcome.

Yes, some before shots would be nice.

Nicely done pair of locos. I agree that the stacks need to be shorter, but I also think you would gain something by putting shorter, larger diameter domes on them too. Those tall domes scream European or Russian to me. Either way, they are still a nice looking pair of locos.

Less Russian, I wasnt aware that the Bachmann looked Russian in the first place?

No full lenth handrails on the outside of the walkway, no buffers, the cab is not enclosed…

Dont get me wrong- I like your bashes, but I’ve seen the “Russian” Russians, and they are a different animal…[:D]
