recessed water area.

i have an area of water on my layout where im going to notch the supports and drop the plywood about 1-1/2". what is good to use to dam up the sides, so all my material doesnt leak out?

Plaster. Plaster Cloth works or just a dam with clay if you want the edge to show. Anything that is LEAK PROOF and not disolved by which ever water product you are using. Foam usually does not work.

Plaster, putty, even masking tape if you can get it to seal well along the smoothest edge possible. I did all of my damming with tape, believe it or not, and even used it along the edge of a cut-out for a pop-up in the middle of my lake. I did have one leak, but that was entirely my doing…natch.

I did use powdered wood putty, mixed as the instructions directed with water, and spread it thinly over my bare plywood. I also spread it up along the banks where I had extruded foam glued to the plywood. I hadn’t a single leak in that case.

A tip: put newspaper, two layers, directly under any areas where the stuff is to be poured, and to where it might seap.

Greg,
I cut the benchwork and dropped it down about two inches and reattached. Glued newspaper in to fill the gaps and overlayed thinned sheetrock mud and paper towels to seal. then painted with latex flat paint.

The lake is at a higher elevation and I used enverotex for my water. I damed up the lake with plumber’s putty to keep the enverotex from flowing into the lower river gorge.
Eventually there will be a waterfall into the river gorge.
Hope this helps.

You may need to add 3/4" x 3/4" blocking between the supports/ joists to give a backer for any of the mentioned materials for daming the lowered area. I like to use plaster cloth and recoat with added layer of plaster for strength and watertight.

I used some of Woodland Scenics Water effects at the top of my waterfall to “dam” up the above area. After that dried I then poured the upper area…worked well for me… just takes a while for the water effects to cure.

I finished my river channel with Sculptamold and then poured the Environtex into it. I had no problems with leaking. I also poured a waterfall using Angel Hair as a base for the Environtex to flow down. I built it up with six separate pours. I was pleased with the final result.
