Reconstruction Begins on the N Scale Western Maryland Western Lines

The new plan is complete, supplies are arriving daily, and it’s time for the work to begin on expanding and improving the layout. It’s going to mean a couple of months of only being able to shift cars in the paper mill, but in the end it will be worth it.

I started the de-construction and salvage operation last night.

Yes, the iconic bridge scene is in the blasting zone, but it will be back with a new and better alignment, and it will be a part of a much more coherent river valley scene.

Lee,

I am wondering how you can improve a layout, which, in my humble opinion, already belongs to the best I have seen. Keep those pictures rolling!

Thanks for that note.

There are a lot of areas on the railroad that were designated as “temporary”… I closed some loops and added some tracks to access the yard, but they definitely weren’t part of the total plan.

This reconstruction will net me more of a point to point operating scheme, with a junction and a branch. The staging will be vastly improved to accommodate both more and longer trains.

And the yard will have better capacity, and a bigger engine terminal for storing and displaying some hardware…

I’m looking forward to sharing my progress with you!

Lee.

I loved watching your 50 car coal drag video for the first time a year or two ago and I still go back to it every so often. Good luck on your redoux of the WMRR. I have no doubt that the changes will enhance your enjoyment of the layout. [tup][tup]

All the best.

Lee,

Wow you’re improving your layout, sounds like the reconstruction will give you more operations and more interesting to run.

How long have you had the current layout completed? ,and how long will it take you to finish reconstruction, including scenery and all?

Good luck,

Michael

Geez, Motley. You sound like my wife! “How long are you going to be up there?”

The present configuration is about 5 years old. As with most things model railroading, it could hardly be considered complete. I had it “functional” for operations sessions, but there were a lot of compromises, both scenickly and operationally. The new plan will address most of these.

You can keep up with the action by following my blog.

Thanks again for your interest.
