Check out this photo. Its a photo of an abondoned right-of-way in Nashville, IL. The track is gone, but the signal is still lit!
That’s funny to see, perhaps the tracks were just taken out recently, and they haven’t had a go at the signals yet.

Haven’t you guys heard of the Ghost train? It doesn’t need real rails, the rails are as ghost-like as the train itself. 
Perhaps they’ll leave the signal to control future bike trail traffic. [:D][;)]

The signal looks red on my screen and it should be, the track circuit is broken. I have similar pictures from many years ago when the Santa Fe was pulled up where it crossed the MOP at Garnett Kansas and where the MOP east of Iola Kansas was removed.
Maybe it is yellow? The signals in the pictures I took are red.
Down in Des Moines, IA next to Market street the NS crosses the UP. At one time there were two NS tracks that crossed but one was removed. The absolute signals are still there and still lit up, showing red for the removed track. I don’t know when the second track was pulled up, but it’s been like that for the 6 and 1/2 years I’ve been on the railroad.

For a long time after they pulled the switches from behind the jr high a yard signal remained at the top of the yard.they(csx) eventually got to it.

Perhaps the S&C guys never got the memo that the track was pulled up and kept maintaining the signal. [:D]
Years ago I saw an article that described a rail line being pulled up, and the lineside signals all went red. They stayed red for many months until the batteries died. (I think the batteries were just back-up in case the commercial power went off, but in this case the commercial power was cut when the line was abandoned).
Twenty to twenty-five years ago, where the ex-Pacific Electric branch line crossed (with switches!) the Santa Fe main at May (between Riverside and Corona in California), track on the branch was taken up, but the signals remained and were lit for months and months.
