Red Roseen paper for hardshell

Hi,

Is there somone who had try red roseen paper as hardshell like Howard Zane use it on his Piermont Division HO scale layout?

Happy new year.

Marc

Yep, I have and can tell you it works great. I didn’t like the red color, so just mixed a bit of earth tone to the white glue, but otherwise used it exactly as described. Even emailed a few photos to Howard when I was first trying it out and he noted I had gotten the jist of it down pat. Its quick, cheap and very forgiving.

Well now you got our curiosity up, How about explaining what Howard’s doing with rosen paper with a bit more detail and WE love Pict’s [:)]…Jerry

PS: I do know that rosen paper is a costruction paper that is used in tile work most times tared black as a membrain & house wrap pre siding/stucco in some mild climates also used in leach feilds , its a heavy paper !

There was an article by Howard Zane in RMC early 2007 (I think) on this technique - it goes by the basic name glue shell. It uses the typical cardboard web, red rosin paper (hot glued to the web) and plain white glue painted on the paper. Here are some older photos I had on hand showing the end-result.

One thing I found as additional layers of ground cover are added is that it gets stronger.

I hope this helps.

WOW;[:O] very cool ,thanks Jerry

The Red Rosen paper is the type usually used to cover hard wood floors before they are finished.

There is also a heavy brown papers used also

Both should be available at the big box stores and quite reasonably priced !

I used to to cover the chicken wire hills on parts of my layout before I put the plaster on and also I use it in squares with Woodland Scenics Clump Foliage glued to it

Then I would take these scenery rugs and glue them to my layout making a very quick forested hills!

Charles,

I believe that rosen paper methods do use white glue, however, if someone searched “glue shell” they would not necessarily find rosin paper in use. I had heard of it before Howards article, but using other medium. Basicly the first articles I saw on “glue shell” used straight or slightly diluted white glue in place of a plaster solution to soak paper towels, newspaper or cloth to make the layout shell.

Have fun,

Richard
