I’ve got a few reefer bodies and wonder if they fit the 1910 time period I’m modeling.
The models depict 40 foot reefers with wood sides, fishbelly metal under-frames, metal ends and metal roofs, the brake wheel is mounted vertically.
Does anyone know when this style first came into use?
Speaking only in general terms, the wood sides, 40’ length, vertical brake wheel and fishbelly underframe would all be suitable for 1910.
I can’t speak about all reefers, but I believe that PFE (who wound up with the biggest fleet) didn’t start using metal roofs until around 1920 and metal ends around 1930. So those could date you a bit.
