Edison is an interesting little ag. town on the UP main just E. of Bakersfield. Even in 2006, reefers are still pretty heavily used here. Even found an orange SP PFE! used for storage only though… [:(]
Nice video, espically for a refrigerated boxcar fan (I would have used reefer but that would have caused too many comments from the peanut gallery).
There should also be many reefers at Famoso. Also, I was in Exeter in late March and saw many there then. There are probably not many at Exeter now since the peak of citrus season is over.
There are also two more SPFE reefers used for storage north of Bakersfield. I think they are by the Merced Avenue or Kimberlina Avenue exits.
I saw the QFRNPP-24 today. Unfortunately it was not very long.

I’ve been seeing quite a few blocks of virtually new white BNSF jumbo refers on manifest trains lately on the BNSF Q racetrack. I don’t think anyone would confuse them with refrigerated boxcars. Are these refers or freezers on wheels or can they do both? Does this have anything to do with the phase out of the Amtrak ExpressTrak service?
Any cars, reffers or not, which have high brakes suck. Can’t stand looking @ them.
Reefer madness!
Thanks for the links Eric, interesting stuff for another PFE fan. Say, do you know what time the Q train is scheduled to leave Fresno? I went by there on the 99 last Weds. morning around 7:30 but didn’t see it. Maybe it had already departed?
Thanks,
JR
It usually leaves anytime between 0700 and 0900.

They can maintain the temperature at a setpoint below or above freezing. By the way, in industry refrigerated does not necessarily mean above freezing. Cryogenic liquids are often called refrigerated liquids, and these are way below 0 degrees Farhenheit.
The latest models are able to set the thermostats from about 0 degrees to up to 55 degrees or higher. While not for sure on the numbers there is at least a 50 degree spread.
I’ve seen notices on specific cars for some subzero temperatures, so I suspect that the range is 60 degrees or more. These temperatures can be monitored to make sure they’re being maintained properly, and sometimes can be adjusted remotely if necessary.
