Reefers

Potatoes are a huge business for railroads like BNSF and UP, but only during the cooler seasons.

2007 hasn’t been a good year for carload perishables. Earlier this month, UP had over 1200 reefers in storage.

A lot of this is because of the frost damage California received in January.

Although not in reefers, most people aren’t aware that a LOT of boxcar traffic leaving California is canned tomatoes and wine.
