You might try the history sections of oil company websites.

If you are ever in Taft, CA, try the West Kern Oil Museum.

They also have some books for sale. They appear to mainly focus on the upstream side, but they may have some refinery shots in them.

I know I saw a photograph of a turn of the 20th century refinery in some California historical society website. I don’t remember what it was but I will post it if I remember.

Get yourself a copy of MR guide to industries along the tracks #1. There is a section on refineries and the oil industry with some old pics and plans.
