I am looking for a power supply for a layout I am going to build in the coming year. I have seen 12 volt and 13.8 volt DC regulated power supplies for sale that are used in laboratories and also for powering automotive stereo systems in the house. They typically have 7 to 20 or even 40 amp ratings. My question is this: Would these work for an HO layout ( assuming you have to have controllers to regulate the voltage to the locomotives or for use with DCC?
If you decide to go for an entry level DCC system you may have to go that way.
With a high end system you don’t need a regulated power supply. An ordinary transformer will do. With a Zimo DCC system, for example, you get to dial in your own voltage at the command station anywhere between 12 and 24V . The output is fully regulated and stabilized. The set voltage can be read off the front display as well as the amperage consumed on the track, CAN bus activity and programming information.

I changing from HO to large scale (G). I have everything I need except 3 walk
around bare bones (a speed control & a reversing switch) throttle units. Does anyone
have a drawing or schematic you will share with me? I need something that will
handle 3 to 6 amps.
My power supply are 2 computer power supplies with 6 amps of filtered DC and adjustable voltage from 11.5 to 22 volts.
