Regulators order Canadian Pacific to resume interchange with MM&A

Have they opened the line through Lac Magentic yet?

Could you tell me how many trucks are going past Lac Megantic with loads of crude oil? Per hour? Per day? Per week? Try zero. Next time, check with reality before shifting blame to those you hate. By the way, consider giving up eating for the rest of your life if you want to really get rid of trucks. Odds are whatever you eat traveled by truck at some point in its journey to your mouth. As did almost everything else you consume.

I find it amazing. The number of people completely out of touch with economics, logistics, and reality is massive.

Jeffery Guse, don’t you realize that most trucks traveling between Montreal & St. John bypass north of Maine and come down along the Trans Canadian to St. John? The only reason trains run through Lac-Megantic on their journey is because the only all-Canadian rail route to St. John requires a very circuitous routing through Moncton.

One would think CP would support resumption of rail service especially regarding non hazardous shipments. Trucks are the enemy not connecting railroads. Get the shipments rolling again!

In fact CPR had partly lifted the embargo, except for hazardous shipments (like crude oil). The order by the CTA was requiring them to interchange ALL traffic.

This order will probably be helpful when fighting attempts in the courts to make CPR partly responsible for clean-up costs. So, while officially the railway is complying reluctantly, the legal team may be quite content.

You can thank the Quebec government for that (by going after CP for MM&A’s Lac Magentic cleanup costs). I don’t think CP would have an issue interchanging so long as they are not on the hook for their connecting railroads’ mistakes.

Jeff: If your competitor took 50% of your business and you saw no threat than you would be completely out of touch with “economics, logistics and reality.”

For years railroads were more concerned about giving traffic to other railroads than trucks. In Middle Tennessee the L&N severed its East Tennessee-Nashville route before announcing abandonment of the remainder. Reason? To make it impossible for Norfolk Southern to ever enter Nashville/Middle Tennessee. This awarded an entire region to trucking.

Just because one loads railcars for a living does not make one an expert.

MMA is handling more hazmat than crude oil - propane (#1075) for a distributor near Bromont for instance. Retaining this little traffic until the railroad assets are sold increase the chance of being taken over by another railroad (read: Irving) instead of someone like A&K RR Materials, who make a living by lifting and selling steel.

No point arguing with goosey. He does not care about trains or transportaion. He abuses the privilege we have by making nothing but anti-government comments (crazy ones). Don’t feed the trolls.

Mr. Devries has put his finger on the heart of the matter. CP had nothing to do with the derailment. Sloppy railroading on the part of the MM&A did - but the lawyers know where the deep pockets are so the CP gets sucked in. No wonder CP is gun shy about interchanging again.
