I have a brand new Bachmann 0-6-0 saddle tanker and it is lettered for the Midwest Quarry and Mining Company and I need to change that. I watched Codys Video “How to remove factory-printed lettering from freight car models”. Which he used Micro Sol and Scotch tape, but I also read in the comments section that it didn’t work on some models and in one case took the paint off too. I also remember not to long ago Cody did a video segment where he stated that that process seemed to work best on Athearn products, but I could not find that one again.
My question is does anyone have a suggestion for a proven way of removing the letters on my Bachmann engine without ruining the paint.
I re-lettered a couple of BLI locomotive by using the finest grit sanding stick I had (600 grit) and gently “erasing” the existing print. It took a little patience, but was controllable and after adding the new decals and weathering, it blended right in.
Also consider a lot of the lettering, logos, etc is pad printed ink and not paint. Not sure what BLI uses (and as it is painted and lettered in China, on any given day, BLI may not be sure either .)
I’ve removed lettering on a couple of locos by using Micro Sol decal setting solution and rubbing the lettering with a new pencil eraser GENTLY. I have also used Pine Sol disinfectant cleaner instead of Micro sol with success.
Well thanks guys, good points about who knows what type of paint or ink was used I’m sure it changes daily in the land of cheap labor. I’ll pick one and if it works it works if not thats what my trusty air brush is for.
