I recently bought an old (1970) Rivarossi Dreyfuss Hudson. The motor is in the cab. Is there a good way to get the motor out of the cab?
Are you talking about temporarily removing the motor, or relocating it? I personally would not invest money in one of the old pizza cutter wheeled Rivarossis. You could probably use a different motor and drive transmission arrangement inside the boiler, if you don’t mind grinding a lot of cast metal away. There are no drop in conversions available, and never have been. The fact that you asked this question leads me to think maybe you shouldn’t take this project on single handed. If the motor is shot, there are replacements on the bay from time to time, and I think Golf Manor would probably have a replacememnt Riv motor in stock.
Thanks. It runs fine, I would just like to get the motor out of the cab. I haven’t disassembled it yet but suspect this won’t be easy.
Does your Hudson look like this?

If the one in the diagram is your’s, relocating the motor shouldn’t be too hard, but it will still take some work. You’ll have to relocate the mount, possibly cut the worm and motor shafts down, and replace the plastic shaft with flexible drive tubing. Since the motor gives the back of the engine a lot of its weight, you’ll probably want to stick some lead or something out of sight in the bottom of the cab. The motor gets half of its power through the frame, so you’ll want to either wire the usually grounded motor brush, or just make sure the motor is still grounded to the frame after you move it.
Does it look like one of these?

I don’t think the boiler is big enough to simply move the motor forward. Those 3-pole monsters pretty much fill the cab, which is why they put them there in the first place. You’d be better off to simply replace the motor with a can motor.
Thanks for all your inputs. The parts breakdowns really help! It is the streamlined Dreyfuss. I think you’re right about a new motor! Looks like it might not be impossible. If I use a new motor and it doesn’t work well, at least the old motor will still work. Thanks for all your responses.
