I have a pair of NWSL N&W E2A Pacifics for my local passenger trains in my N&W scenario (I run three different roads, but the equipment is never mixed, hence my “scenarios”).
These models were made in Japan, I think in the 70’s, and have open frame motors.
I’m of two minds about re-motoring them with cans. As they are, they run reasonably well (like most other NWSL open frame power), but they are noisy.
Does anyone have any experience with this particular re-motoring job? Thoughts or suggestions as to whether I should proceed?
I would not remotor them - I have not remotored mine.
I believe that the gears are the source of the noise not the motor.
If you do want to remotor them, telephone NWSL for advice.
If you do remotor them, you will have to reduce the gear box clearances to reduce the worm movement because can motors do not have as strong a thrust bearing as the open fram motors do. Most models with open frame motors were designed so that the thrust loading of the worm on the worm gear was absorbed by the motor bearings. Can motors do not have bearings that will stand up to this thrust load.
FYI: the designation is E2a, not E2A
Any more comments or suggestions?
