Remove Locomotive cover help!

Hello,

I recently aquired the KATO PA-1 (Delaware and Hudson set) and the P42 (Amtrak). They are both DC and I have the DCC Decoders for them. I cannot manage to get the covers off and its driving me crazy. I am afraid to split the frame too much for fear of bending/breaking it.

There has got to be an easier way. This is something that comes with experience and yours would be highly appreciated.

Vicky,

I just dug out one of my PA’s, I have 3 PA’a and 2 PB’s.

The extension of the shell between the trucks has a molded latch on the inside. Spreading that section will allow the chassis to drop out.

Once you get the shell off, take a good look at the light board on top of the chassis. Forward of center, you’ll see two small copper strips (these are the motor leads) bent around the outside of the light board and held under a gray, rectangular plastic piece with two small holes. This piece retains the light board to the chassis.

If you have a jeweller’s screw driver, or a very small screw driver, gently pry this piece up, It has two tabs that lock into the light board. keep your finger above the retainer, it will fly.

Once the retainer is removed, carefully straighten the two motor leads, this will allow you to remove the light board.

Note the two metal strips, one on each side of the chassis. These pickup track power and conduct it to the decoder. Your instructions will take you through the rest of the process.

I’ve only installed one decoder in a P42, but I believe the shell is removed the same way. The one I did is my neighbor’s and I don’t have it here to look at.

Please let us know how it goes.
