Removing a decal

How to remove NYC decal from brass tender, factory painted, seems to have a clear overcoat over the decal, how do I remove it without destroying the paint? (alcohol, etc.? or is there a product for removing the clear coat? want to put on new different RR decal.

Any help out there?

I have successfully lifted factory-applied decals using a product called ELO (Easy Lift Off). It is now made by Testors, and stores that carry Testors paints usually stock it.

Follow the directions religiously, and you won’t harm the paint.

I believe that with Easy Lift Off, or any other removal method, I would have a concern about the coating on top of the decal. I would think that you have to get through that first. So you would be removing a gloss coat, and then the decal. I’m not sure how any differences in the resulting finishes can be hidden or corrected.

Although there may not actually be a problem, it might be prudent to think about how to correct an issue should it occur.

Presumably, after replacing the decals, he would reapply a gloss coat or a dull coat. To the whole loco / tender. That’s what I do, and I can’t see any differences in my finishes.

Unfortunately, I’m in the if anything can possibly go wrong it probably will camp. If adjacent areas get attacked by the decal removal process, it’s best to have an escape plan.
