I have seen other posts on removing and replacing link couplers on American Flyer rolliong stock. However, most recommend the tools made for this task. For the present, I am only looking at removing and replacing one coupler. Therefore, I am not too anxious to invest about $20 in the removal and installation tools. Portlines Repair Clinic outlines an alternative method of removing the pin using needle nose pliers. Has anyone tried this method? If so, how well did it work? I am going to put the link coupler on another car. Is there any way to install the pin without using the tool designed for this purpose? Any suggestions are appreciated. Jerry

There is no other way than the installation tool. I prefer the cheaper one from Portlines, which is shorter and easier to manage than the more expensive tool.
The needlenose pliers method works for removing the pins, just watch your fingers. I had the pliers slip a few times.
