Removing Lettering From Proto 1000 Boxcars

The particular boxcars I need for a project aren’t available in undecorated, so I was forced to buy decorated ones … question is, what is the best method to remove the lettering from these cars to get down to a smooth paintable surface.

If at all possible, I’d like to retain the base color, just remove the lettering. Anyone have any success in doing this ?

I’ve found that non-acetone nail polish remover works on ones I’ve done. Just don’t scrub too hard or it’ll take everything off.

In the most recent episode of Cody’s Office Cody Grivno used Micro Sol to do just what you are wanting to do. You may want to check it out.

I tried several methods to remove lettering from some Proto1000 Fowler Patent boxcars, including methyl hydrate, brake fluid, and PollyScale E-Z Lift-Off, none of which worked. I ended-up using a #17 chisel blade in my X-Acto, dragging it with the non-bevelled edge leading and the handle leaning slightly in the direction of travel. The lettering was removed and the paint, for the most part, was undamaged, although I repainted the entire cars as I had replaced all of the steps and grabirons with metal parts:
