removing molded on grab irons

What is the easiest technique for removing grab irons that are molded on? I have some locomotives that I want to remove the molded on irons and replace with actual grab irons.

Thanks

Todd

Micro Mark sells a scalpel w/ interchangeable blades. I use the chisel blade & shave them off VERY slowly. Take a little at a time. If you are careful you can save the bolt detail & that will give you the correct location for the new grabs. Drill the mounting hole w/ a drill in a pin vise 1 size larger than the diameter of the grab. Use a pc. of styrene under them to keep them the proper distance from the body & secure them from the inside W/ a drop of CA.

XACTO also has a chisel blade, but it is too wide for my liking. Jerry

If possible round off the edges of the chisel blade with a file. This will lessen the chance of gouging the plastic.

A classic “now why didn’t I think of that?” technique, thanks Ray.

MicroMark also offers a 2mm chisel that is actually intended for just this sort of work.

I have one of those, it works very well.

Single edge razor blade. I have a full assortment of hobby knives/blades as well as surgical scalpels, and the razor blades are still my most used hobby tool.

I agree with Dave, the Micromark chisel works well and the handle with ridges lessens the probability of slipping and chiseling your fingers. [banghead]
