Removing molded on parts.

I’ve recently purchase several Bachmann cabooses and will convert them to CB&Q NE12s. How do I go about removing the molded -on roof walks without ruining the roof? I’ve tried an E-xacto chisel blade but that didn’t work. Any suggestions?

Can you email or post a picture of the caboose? I could maybe give you a better idea if I saw one.

The running boards are approx. 1/16 ‘’ thick by 3/8s wide, solid plastic. A Dremal tool will just melt the plastic and leave nicks and dings.

Since you’re talking about a repaint, you can remove the walkways with a mill file, then go to finer files and sanding cloth as you get down to roof level for a smooth finish.
