Hi, I have aquired an old brass PFM 4-4-0 Reno and I want to remove the paintjob that now is on it. Do anyone have any suggestions how this is done the easiest way without damaging the solder or the brass? Paintremover, kerosene…?
I guess the model have been painted with enamelpaint.
Thanks!
If you really what to keep the engine safe, give it to a professional model painter to have it stripped. I’ve heard far too many horror stories about homegrown attempts at stripping paint off brass models that can’t be replaced cheaply. Depending on the type and method the existing paint was applied, it might be easy to remove or a bear using commercial strippers. And bead or sand blasting in amateur hands can easily ruin a brass model. Further, some older brass model mechanisms had a few plastic gears in their drivetrains and these can be attacked by the stripper, ruining the model for good.
Do yourself a favor and have a pro handle the job…you’re not dealing here with some cheap Athearn diesel shell.
