removing paint

I have an old prewar engine (#150) that runs great but looks terrible. I’m thinking of restoring the finish but would like to remove all the old paint (which is badly worn and pitted). I have the marroon paint on hand, having just purchased it from Olsen’s Toy Train Parts.

Does anyone have any great ideas about the best way to remove the old paint without ruining the metal body?

Please respond directly to my email address: meyerde1@harbornet.com

Thanks,

David

The March 2001 issue of CTT features a story called “8 stepsto restore old trains,” with the focus on prewar metal trains.

The author suggests unsing “Any brand of household semi-paste paint remover.” As an alternative, he suggests that after disassembly, placing the pieces to be stripped in a boiling cauldron of water with four or five cups of detergent powder. Let bopil for several hours.
