Removing the Shell of an Atlas SD-7 N scale?

How do you remove the shell of an Atlas SD-7 N scale? This is a silver series, so it has a speaker already installed. I want to add an ESU LokSound decoder, but I have to get the thing opened first. Anyone have experience with this?

Also, what ESU LokSound decoder is recommended for this locomotive? It has the new ESU E24 connector, so I assume the LokSound 58925 would work, am I correct?

Any help would be appreciated.

I always liked this method when I was in N scale. I generally didn’t lift the jewel case as high as Mike Fifer in this video unless the shell was really stuck.

Hope this helps,

Yep, that was my first idea too, but the drop method did not work after several tries.

OK, I just tried it for the fifth time and it worked!!!

I should add that I had also removed the couplers and the fuel tank cover before this final attempt. I think removing the couplers was unnecessary.

Yes, sometimes they really need a good whack. Just be careful to not to get too close to the front edge of the pilot and risk breaking off footboards.

You shouldn’t need to remove the couplers or fuel tank.

Glad you got it. Nervewracking, isn’t it?

Yep, nervewracking.

I did get an Atlas support person return my contact with a phone call in which he also told me to use the drop box technique!

Now I have to order the appropriate ESU LokSound decoder for this locomotive. It is a silver series so the speaker is already installed. I wish all locomotives had the speaker already installed.
