Caught this in The Daily Journal this morning as I was reading through the paper for potential projects to bid. Now if I only had the 5 years of previous steam knowledge required! I still might have to go to the pre-bid just for kicks if I’m not too busy. Check out the BidInvitation for more info.
Just for curiosity, I’m assuming GLRR #9 is the same as C&S #9 which was just put back into service last year after a complete rebuild out in Strasburg. Can everything listed be necessary after just one tourist season?
Someone’s out of their mind. Doing all that would be more like 2 million bucks . And in 100 days? Dream on.
IIRC C&S #9 was moved off the property when the operating lease was reissued and the GLRR #9 is a different engine - perhaps a former Hawiian sugar engine.

DD,
When the old operators moved out, they took a couple of their locos (which currently reside at CRRM). C&S #9 belongs to the historical society, and as far as I know was completely refurbished in Strasburg. It began running last year. They also do have the Hawaiian Sugar Can loco, but she’s #12. I’m a little surprised that she isn’t the loco listed, because IIRC last year she busted an axle about mid-season.
I may be able to get away from work on the day of the pre-bid. If the weather is decent, I might have to make a trip up to Silver Plume and find out some more details.
I skimmed the bid announcement and it sounds like a complete running gear rebuild of a worn out engine. From my experience in working with historical steam, it would take more than 100 days just to get bids from the subcontractors!
