Without actually counting I would dare to say there are a number of threads asking about how to post pictures on this forum. Worse yet someone going off topic to ask the same question.
How about removing the MR Anniversary Boxcar and replace it with How to Post pictures? Or pin the directions at in each of the forums?
I think how to post (short answer, you need to post to another unrelated website to which you can copy or in essence, link) is covered elsewhere. Why remove a thread when you either already have it or can add it?
That is one of the points—but I thought he was talking about doing a thread on posting pictures on this site so that others might know how to do this so that it be stickied maybe?[%-)][:-^]–As for replacing the MR boxcar—don’t need to --just leave it as a sticky at the top
We have tried to get that replace with something worth while through two forum software upgrades over the last five years to no avail. Someone in charge likes it. Just ignore it.
On the other hand we now have a FAQ. We need to start referring people to it, instead of taking up screen space with pin messages on all the forums.
I though that forum was for children playing. At least it look like that to me. Not sure anyone ever saw one of the cars, just “thought they did”.
Also, many new members never seem to read FAQ pages or instructions, They jump in and ask a question and bail. Many do not know they can search the archives, ok, What are archives someone will ask?
I belong to over twenty forums on three different subjects and I see the same issues on all the forums. The Yahoo groups have Files, Photos and Links section that members can upload files to. Many new members are not aware there is a lot of data there. Again, ask and bail.
Please hand feed me I see a lot. Not going to change.
I have been using forums for nearly as long as they have been on the 'Net and these issues are still the same.
The search function on this particular forum produces less than desirable results; not to mention that it is unwieldy to manage.
I often wonder if those promoting that new members use the search function to find information have actually tried it themselves. Or do they need not be concerned because they already know everything?
24 forums sounds like quite a few. Maybe it’s time to take a break.
Be careful what you wish for, you may get it! And then find out what you considered “worth while” was eliminated for what others consider “worth while.”
There is a “Community Assistance” forum for all of Trains.Com users, but it seems no one uses it. That would be the proper place to ask “how to” questions. In reality is it really that bad that people don’t do that? Most seem (I know I do) to only look at the forums that normally interest them. That’s bound to lead to questions that better belong somewhere else.
On using the Archives, I recently tried to look up a post that I had written to answer a question that had been previously discussed, but in a slightly different question. After a while I found it easier to just rewrite what I had previously done. Maybe I should have just said, “Been there, done that. Look it up.”
Maybe someone has tried looking for an answer, but still not found quite what they were looking for. Or maybe they think there may be an updated answer. Re-asking a question can also be a benefit. In the few years I’ve been around there has been a change in people who regularly visit. Some have gone, new ones have taken there place. Re-asking may lead to new information from someone who wasn’t around a few years ago.
I will give a try at this, only because the FAQ is a bit vague and somewhat incomplete. Plus, the FAQ link appears only on the top forum page, although you can get to it by clicking on “Customer Service” just above your name on the upper right part of the page.
First, you need to post or upload your photo to a “publicly accessible web page,” and posters above have suggested some popular ones. “Publicly accessible” means that anyone can see your photo by entering at the top of the browser window the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of your photo. For example, if you type in the URL line of your browser “http://unimind.us/scirockit/2PCT.jpg” and press the “Enter” key, you will view one of my photos.
Once you have uploaded your photo, you can direct this forum to it using the URL. Because URLs are fussy about upper case and lower case I recommend that you actually view your uploaded photo in your browser and copy the URL by right-clicking in the URL line of your browser and then left-clicking on “Copy” in the drop-down menu. Many posters go astray because they don’t have an EXACT copy of the URL for their photo.
Now your PC has a good copy of your URL in its clipboard. Don’t do any other copy actions or you will overwrite it. If you have several photos to make links for, then you can paste each one into Notepad for later copy/paste into this forum.
In your post (or “Reply” post) on this forum put the cursor where you want the photo to appear and click on the green tree icon in the second row at the top of the Message window. When you first put your cursor on the tree icon, a label appears that says “Insert/edit image.” An “Insert/edit image” window appears when you click on the icon. Do a right click in the “Image URL” box, and select (left click) the “Paste” command in the drop-down menu. The URL for your photo will appear in the “Image URL” box. If it looks OK then click in the “Insert” box to
