Replacement LED for EOT/FRED?

I got a FRED/EOT kit for $5 at a swap meet a couple weeks ago and finally installed it in my N scale Con-Cor autorack. But I think I burned out the LED after trying to solder a wire to it. What size would a replacement be LED be for FRED usage? I know it’s awfully small, but the smallest I can find are T1 (3mm).

I have no idea who made this kit. It uses an N-sized battery cell and has a postage-stamp sized circuit board with a dark blue capacitor on it. The switch is a small SPDT switch, not a reed switch.

Also, how do I best solder a wire to it without burning it out?

For tiny LED’s try Ngineering:

They have LEDs which are small in physical size but not in light intensity. There micro LED is similar to the ones used by Atlas in the newer HO scale releases and in the new Miniatronics lighting kits for passenger cars.

Did you try reversing the leads? An LED like most diodes only work in one direction. You have an anode and a cathode. Try reversing the connection and try again.

Yep, tried that. Won’t light up.
