Replacement Motor for Bachmann Spectrum HO Dash 8-40CW

Hi from the Uk

I have two HO Bachmann Spectrum Dash 8 Loco’s that I need to find replacement motors for. I have contacted Bachmann but they no longer stock replacement motors. I am considering purchasing a couple of Mashima motors but despite extensive research on various websites I can’nt find a motor designed to fit this loco.

I wandered if anyone has done this type of upgrade and could suggest a suitable motor. I should add that both locos are the older DC versions.

Hello mate good to see you on here.

Not having a Bachmann Dash 8 I can’t help you on that issue but I have used the Mashima motors and that’s a good choice for a motor. I have a pair of Athearn SD40-2 frames with Cary E7 cast metal bodies (2½ pounds each) that I remotored and they are very powerful and quiet running.

The Canon EN22D (dual shaft) works very good too at a much lower cost.

I use Evergreen #228 tubing as a conduit to prevent the wiring from touching the drive flywheels and drive line.

If the original factory motor is no longer available, the best you can do is find one close and make alterations to make it fit - you may have to grind out some more space in the frame, or fill in with some sort of mount to attach the motor if it ends up being smaller. Longer or shorter drive shafts, as needed. ALmost certainly it will be a bit of a project, not just a simple drop in sort of job. Or perhaps you can aquire another of the same loco that has a broken shell and use the chassis - or even a different bachmann model that uses the same motor, and swap the good motor in your model.
