Replacement of gaskets inside of diesel shells for better smoke [think Pigseye asked this one time]

Noticed some smoke escaping around the shell of a Lionel Dash 9 that I had modified the smoke unit. Was smoking good but seemed to just drift out [I had corrected the fan direction so I knew it was right] . This unit had the “off set” smoke funnel. Idea. I used the closed foam insulation [one side sticky] as a gasket for the dummy. I checked the gasket and it was there but sure was skinny. The ACE insulation [3/16 thick X 1 1/4 wide] will just fit inside the shell of all of the SD’s and Dash’s so I put in the insulation as a gasket. Just the right thickness to touch the shell but not hold it too far off. Man did it blow the smoke “to the ceiling”. [;)] Liked it so well, I did a SD60 that had the “off set” smoke funnel. Worked great. Take the funnel out and mash it into the insulation and get imprint and cut it out. Stick it inside the shell so the hole matches the smoke stack. Put shell back on and fire it up. Now we have the answer to gasket material for smoke units.

Great idea, Chief! The insulation you refer too - is that the stuff that’s used as weatherstripping for doors and windows? I like the fact that it also has its own adhesive. This is a tip worth remembering.

That is it. This width is refered to as camper and truck shell insulation. Gray and one side sticky.
