Replacing gear towers, brass steamers

Presently I have several brass steam locos sitting idle because of gear tower failures. I’m thinking of simply installing a large helical gear on the driving axle and mating it to a worm on the motor shaft like the Bowser steamers of yore. I have a few engines with this kind of drive arrangement and they seem to give much less trouble. Any comments and/or suggestions?

Like davidmbedard said, Northwest Short Line (NWSL). I’ve used a lot of their gears and gearboxes, and they are absolutely top-of-the-line products. They offer just about every size of gear and gearbox you’ll ever need, and you’ll end up with smooth, quiet running brass![:D]
