I HAVE A RIVAROSSI E8 DIESEL WHICH I HAVE BOUGHT BACK IN THE LATE 80’S AND WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE THE MOTOR IN IT BUT CAN NOT FIND A MOTOR THAT WILL FIT THE UP RIGHT MOTOR WHICH CAME WITH THE LOCO, THE MOTOR THAT CAME WITH IT IS A THREE POLE MOTOR AND I USE DCC. ANY HELP, JOHNNHY
First of all, welcome to the forum! I’m guessing the E8 has the type of motor known as a “Pancake” drive - is it mounted transversely across one truck, with a gear train down one side and the brushes on the other? Your best chance to replace these would be a complete mechanism - it’s tricky to replace the motor on these as it’s moulded integrally. You may find that you could give the existing mechanism a good clean, fit a DCC decoder with BEMF (Back-EMF - this reads back motor current to give smoother running, they’re very effective on 3-pole motors) and have a decent runner. Good luck!
Look into a Hobbytown power chassis sold by Bear Locomotive. www.bearlocomo.zoovy.com Site was not working today??? This is a new frame and two 3 axle trucks with side frames and one motor driving both trucks. Great runners and pullers if built correctly. May be more work than you are looking for.

Hello Johnny and Welcome Aboard.
I have a 1980s Rivorossi E8 also. I’m checking out the repowering option as well. The Bear Locomotive “repower” chassis for E units seems like the best way to go. They range in price from $40 to $85. The $60 option is the one I’ll probably go with. I decided to keep my Rivorossi E8 for sentimental reasons since it was given to me by a friend 20 years ago.
Something to consider, however, is that on Ebay and discount web stores you can often buy brand new Proto 2000 E units from the $40 to $80 range as well, which, IMHO, is a better bargain. At a train show I purchased an E7 for $39 brand new.
So do your homework. Let us know what you decide to do.
Peace, Cheers and High Greens.
JUST A NOTE TO SAY THANKYOU ALL WITH YOUR TIME ON HELPING ME AND LETTING BE PART OF THIS FORUM, MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL, JOHNNY
Johnny,
I have to agree with what Antonio has said about a new P2K E unit. I just bought
a brand new E7 at the hobby shop for $45. These can be found all over the internet.
The P2K E’s with DCC and sound can be found for around $100- $150. Good luck, Dave
Oh yeah, Welcome aboard…
