Requesting help finding a post

I run up on a post the other day about cabinet maker alignment pins used when making modules. Could someone help me in finding the post again? And while hunting around I found a post by “Jon Grant”. I found his site was VERY informative on modular building and the jointing of each module. And in a few pictures of his RR it shows the pins. I am compiling all the information I’m collecting in a database for future use.

Thank You for your help.

Sometimes the simplest things get forgotten.

Have you tried doing a search using some of the words or topic that you remember? Just enter them in the “search” box below the last message in any post. You should get quite a few hits. Just read what pops up to find something that sounds familiar before clicking on each link.

thats just the problem, I can’t remember. Dealing with lots of bad news today

They are dowel pins…commonly used in construction to align 2 seperate pieces both laterally, and vertically.

Maybe that helps?

Sorry about whatever bad news you are dealing with…I hope it gets better soon!

Maybe this will help.

Here is a drawing of the pin and bushing setup I’m interested in. It seems to be from Europe. The pin has only 0.005 clearance to fit into the bushing. I know that I could make a make due kinda thing. But would like is find this in the US some where.

FYI, Sometimes I have trouble with the search engine on this forum. For example, last month (June 2008) we had a really good theread on soldering techniques. I used some of the suggestions from that thread and went to post a followup message. However, when I searched for “soldering”, the most recent thread I got back was from October 2007 (plus many more earlier ones). I just so happened to remember the title of the thread, so I changed my search to “soldering wrong” and presto the thread magically appeared at the top of the serach results. The complete thread title was “Soldering: what am I doing wrong?!”. I dont know if the colon ( right after the word “soldering” was confusing the search engine, but if I had not remembered the title of the thread, I may not have been able to find it without going back through the forum threads page by page.

I guess the point of my post is to say that if you do not find something with the first search, try some variations to see if you get better results. Or try an external search such as Google–I just tried this search “soldering site:trains.com” and the thread I was originally looking for did indeed show up #4 in the search results.

That looks remarkably similar to the hinge arrangement on a kit cabinet-towel rack that is now hanging on my bathroom wall. You might want to check (high card in the suite) or some other hardware emporium for the equivalent.

Unless you are modeling in NNN scale, 0,005" is WAY tighter than necessary. Four times that is plenty close enough for 1:80 scale.

Please note that I have give up on finding a source for this product and will design my own drilling jig to make sure all of the holes are aligned with each other. I may post my conclusions once my web site is complete. I plan to put all of the design data in one place rather then having to search the web for each and every little piece of data on how to build a module, interface at the ends, along with leg designs and how to transport the modules once complete. I will say that if designed right the modules can be transported in pairs without any scenery and/or structures being removed.

The devices you’re looking for are called patternmaker’s dowels. I can’t help with a US supplier, but they are widely available in the UK. Here is just one supplier:

Hope this helps.

On another subject, you may feel aggrieved by the comments made elsewhere on this forum about your website - but blasting people with cod dance music and telling them “You are a idiot” when they attempt to visit your site is not a good look.

It tends to confirm my suspicion that you’re a bit immature.

Mark.

Mark that is exactly the product I was searching for. I thank you for posting the link.
