Reset Password?

I’ve received, like I assume you have as well, two emails telling me that updates to the forums have been performed and I need to reset my password. So if I can make this post then why do I need to change my password? Thnx all.

Regards, Chris

Was this notice for the TRAINS site or for this forum?

It’s from Trains.com, which I thought encompasses all of the forums.

Regards, Chris

I’m not sure, but I think Trains.com and forum.trains.com operate as separate systems.

i have not

Nor have I.

I think York1 is correct.

Then maybe it’s because I have trains.com.videos?

Regards, Chris

Yes, I think so.

“They” are getting extremely sophisticated these days, so could it be a SCAM???

I have also gotten two. Not a SCAM. I can access both forums and Trains.com, including videos. I can only assume that the 2nd was not filtered for folks that had already reset it.

I thought so also, but I clicked on the sender address it says “Trains .com” so I’m assuming it’s legit

Regards, Chris

Justus, so did you reset your password? Or can you access normally?

Regards, Chris

I clicked on the link in the 1st email, reset my password (to what the old system had) and then logged in using the “reset” password. Unless both the old and new systems have my password in cleartext - a HUGE security mistake, it should not know I reset it to the same value. It’s long and complex, not used for any other web site and there are no signs of compromise - so no need to use a different one.

Which them is the they?

Probably scammers.

Gidday Penny, Engine1988 is correct, by “They” I meant scammers.

A recent personal example of “extremely sophisticated” were emails I received purportedly coming from Flickr regarding copyright breach issues, which took me to the actual Flickr site. My unsophisticated mental warning alarm was triggered, so I backed out, deleted the emails, after taking a screenshot, and contacted Flickr help, who were very helpful, but confirmed that it was a scam, and they were deleting the offending accounts.

So, just because an email looks legit, and takes you to a “proper site,” like “Flickr.com” doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been, unknowingly, compromised.

I guess what I should have originally said was, if you’re uncertain, then contact the sites “help”! The possibility of looking stupid if you’re wrong, is inconsequential to being scammed.

Cheers, the Bear. :slightly_smiling_face:

Looking at the email on Gmail: it looks like Trains.com, but when I expand the sender address it says: Trains.com Trains@trainsemail.com Note: the Trains forum software converted this text copy into a link and removed the arrow bracket surrounding the last 3 words which is the actual email address you would be replying to.
I am suspicious if it is an actual Trains site.

Thnx all for your comments. Think I’ll just ignore it.

Regards, Chris

Not a scam, and yes York! is correct. If you have any subscriptions you need to reset your Trains.com password.

They did serious maintenance on the main website for the magazines and told subscribers they would need to reset their passwords. I reset mine this morning to renew my Classic Trains subscription - it allowed me to reset it to my previous password.

The forums are separate, but you can use the same password if you want.

Sheldon

Thanks Sheldon, I just reset it with no drama envolved.
