Resistor Placement in LED Circuits

Does it make any difference where the resistors are positioned in an LED circuit.

I would like to postition the resistors on the control panel for easier wiring.

Would this have any impact compared to attaching them closer to the LEDs - the difference would be about 3 feet.

NO They will work OK anywhere.

No, it doesn’t matter where the resistor goes, as long as it is in series with the LED. It can go either on the + or - side of the LED, too. Resistors are not directional, so they can be flipped end-for-end in a circuit. LEDs do have a positive and negative side, though, so you need to make sure that’s right or you will have one of those “Darkness Emitting Diodes,” or DEDs. [:-^]

FYI, since you’re a new guy, we have a parallel forum called Electronics and DCC. Most wiring questions are handled over there, and you might pick up some other electronic tips by browsing the topics over there.

And welcome aboard!

Now THAT is funny - at least to this EE. Thanks for the laugh Mister B.

DEDS! Good one!

I had a lot of those at one time. Bought one of those ‘grab bags’ with like 50 random LEDs for $1. Got a battery and resistor - at least half were actually DEDs. Or someone had gotten cute and colored the packages of infrared LEDs. [:D]
