I need help restoring my dad’s HO Union Pacific 4-6-2 steam engine which is about 40 years old. I don’t know what company makes it but it says mikado on the bottom of the tender. The front end is missing where the cow catcher would originally be and i either need a replacement part or a picture so i can scatch build it. any help would be much appreciated.
Bowser makes the largest selection of pilots: www.bowser-trains.com
Precision Scale makes many pilots as well, in plastic and brass: http://www.precisionscaleco.com/ (their website is pretty useless, and their catalogs are $18. I’d go with Bowser first)
Does it look like this? http://web.theinter.com/~wolfy_is/engines/t462/t462f.jpg
If so it is a Mantua/Tyco.
Some parts are still floating around at trainshows or Ebay.
I’m also restoring the same loco, which I got for my 7th birthday. I just turned 40. My con tact for parts is-

They should have the cowcatcher/steps assembly in stock. My old parts diagram lists it as Part#3675 and $1.50, butthis price is from 1980. They will sent you an updated parts list/assembly instructions on request. I also ordered a replacement can motor from

It was $47.95 which includes a worm gear to match the spur gear on the middle driver and a flywheel. I’m DCC so I instlalled a decoder in the tender. A fresh coat of paint should finish up my restoration.
yes
I have one that I restored and another in the process.
I may upgrade this one with a better motor and a Cary boiler.
Great Response!
Seems monthly we get a modeler who needs Mantua help. I’ll print this one out & save.
Matter of fact I also have the same steamer thanks to the picture posted by Ray.
Al metal tender, 18 oz cast metal loco.
The Alliance Helix Humper remotor kits for Mantua engines (available through Bowser) make a WORLD of difference in Mantua engines! They’ll actually have slow speed controls and a slower top speed, and they don’t sacrifice any pulling power. I’ve got two repowered Mantuas, and love 'em!
Here’s the parts you need.
