Resurrecting a Katrina survivor

I am in the process of resurrecting a katrina survivor…its a post-war 2025 with a bit of rust here and there but now that i have it apart whats best for cleaning the motor assembly?? all suggestions welcomed and just as a side note is there anyone else out there who restored a katrina survivor???

thanks!!!

I would give it a light spray of oil, such as WD40 to help stop any rust. Probably have to rewire. did the locomotive get under water or just damp?

After getting it apart it appears it only got damp…looks like the wheels sat on a damp surface for a while as here was rust on the wheels where it sat. the gears still have a coating of oil /grease and the e-unit was probably the worst part on it…its pretty much shot but i am still going to try and refurb it. I have some TV tuner cleaner but its expensive so i am looking for other sources to clean with that are a bit easier on the wallet.

Take a moment and visit www.sandwparts.com - it’s the website for a train repair shop in the New Orleans area. They have a link to a video that talks about a train set they restored for someone after Katrina. It’s a short 3-4 minute video that’s well worth watching. I’m sure they could also offer some tips on the techniques they’ve used on other Katrina damaged items.

CRC makes contact cleaners that are much cheaper than the Radio Shack stuff. CRC QD Contact Clean is available at Lowes and Home Depot, and CRC Electronic Cleaner is available in the automotive section at Walmart, as well as auto parts stores. Both products are the same, but the name is different due to the different markets. When I bought a can of the CRC Electronic Cleaner at Walmart last week, it was about $5 for a large can. Both CRC products are safe for plastic.
