Does anyone know of a book that would list rolling stock, their times of introduction and the roads that utilized them ,much the same way that the steam and diesels have been included in the spotter’s guide? I realize that this would have been a tall order, but someone might have decided to tackle it.

Yes the New England Berkshire and Western model railroad club member John Nekrich has written just such a book including variations and modifcations over time. It should be availabel form a number of sources and also in their member section of their web page if you sign up for it.
There is also a history of the American Car and Foundry company which has considerable information you might find useful. Also consult the various Freight Car Cyclopedia available on disc.

Historical societies often run this kind of article in their bulletins and magazines. I know that the Burlington Route Historical Society and the Chicago & North Western Historical Society both have done quite a bit on freight car history but of course tailored to their specific road. Using the Car Builder’s Cyclopaedia can also recreate a fair amount of this sort of information but that is not its primary function
